Squidoo History
Squidoo was started in 2005 by Seth Godin. The concept showed incredible foresight. Godin clearly could see the way that the web was going. Web 2.0 was already underway as the new form of community building.
Web 2.0 is interactive and involved. The separation between webmaster and web visitor is blurred. The two parties become involved in nothing short of a relationship. You are the webmaster and I am the visitor. I suggest something to you and you change the site and ask for my input and with the number of visitors suddenly the web 2.0 site is a lively, living, and growing entity.
Squidoo bridges the gap between webmaster and visitor. It is an intersection between the old ways and the new ways. Suddenly “Everyone is an expert” as they say on Squidoo. Actually that is the title of the ebook that Seth put together as the working guide to the Squidoo community.
Godin is a 1982 graduate of Tufts University in 1982. His degree is in computer science and philosophy. He also has an MBA in marketing from Stanford Business School. After he graduated from Tufts, he worked as a brand manager at Spinnaker Software from 1983 to 1986.
One of his first online venture was the 1995 marketing company, Yoyodyne. This was one of the first online marketing venture. Three years later, Seth sold Yoyodyne to Yahoo! Along with the sale, Godin was made Yahoo!’s Vice-President of Permission Marketing. He also wrote a column for Fast Company.
Godin created Squidoo which he views as a recommendation network.
One of the great things about Squidoo is that it was able to twist and turn as needed while it grew. For instance, by the time Squidoo got rolling, it was immediately popular and in 2007 was considered the fastest growing site of all.
