The Squidoo Secret

Squidoo SecretLike everything else in life there is a secret to Squidoo success.

Most people might guess that the secret is content and they are almost right. Content is needed to retain visitors and have them come back again and again.

But if you don’t have the visitors in the first place the best content in the world will not do you any good.

The secret is to find your niche. Take a look at Squidoo’s Top 100 and you will get an idea of what topics are attractive. You might be surprised at the lens topics and think, well who on earth would be interested in that?

If you already have a site, it is easy. You can focus on that topic. If you don’t have a site already or have one that you are not fully committed to, then Squidoo is a great way to test out a topic.

If you are new to internet marketing, think of Squidoo as a testing ground. If you are not sure of a topic, you can test out two or three niches and pretty soon you will be able to see which one draws the most traffic.

There is nothing to say that you can’t have a dozen niches if you want, or a hundred.

The best way to find your perfect niche is to look at your own passions and choose one of them. If you don’t have a specific passion, there are other ways you can find a niche that is worth while.

Google Trends shows you the top 100 searches for that day. If you look through these 100 phrases, you might see something that triggers a thought and you can follow that topic to see if it a) is worthwhile and b) something that can sustain your interest.

An odd thing happened to me as I was writing this article. I dropped in to visit a neighbor and we got talking about niche marketing. He said, why not do a Squidoo on how to cook lobster.

Hmmm, lobster. Well now there is a decent idea. I planned to do a little research on it tomorrow. But as I was writing this, I went over to Google Trend to look at the top 100 searches. And there, in the list, was a top ranking search phrase, “how to cook lobster tail.”

My neighbor might have a point. This brings me to a great idea for finding niches – brainstorm with people. Some of the ideas might be ridiculous but then, who would have imagined taming parrots would rank in Squidoo’s top ten lenses?

At Paypal Shops, you can search through the shop categories and see how the shops are ranked according to volume. This is a good indicator of what is selling online.

There is another clever way to see what people are willing to spend money on. Go on down to the local magazine shop and see what the shelves are offering. If there is a magazine dedicated to the topic, then there are enough people out there buying that magazine and by extrapolation, who might be willing to spend money on related products.
